This mutant is called balloon wing because of the balloon shaped bubbles that appear on each of the four wings. These "balloons" are filled with hemolymph, which serves as blood for insects. The balloons allow for the collection of fairly large amounts of hemolymph without injury to the cockroach. This allows for repeated collections from the same individual.
